Top 10 Canadian Musicians of All Time

As many of you know, SaveFans.com is staffed chalk full of concert loving Canadians. Love the Great White North baby!

I decided to share with you what I think will become the definitive list of Top Ten Canadian musicians of all time. This promises to be better than our world famous Top 10 Jewish musicians list. Gotta love Canada baby! Without further delay, we present you with the Top 10 list.

Number #10 – Celine Dion

Celine Dion is flat out one of the finest singers to ever walk the planet. Say what you will about her musical selection or fashion sense, but this classy Diva from Montreal has some massive pipes! Celine is also a savvy business woman who earned a reported $100M+ for her two year stint at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas…wow.

Number #9 Snow aka Darrin O’Brien

Admit it! This makes you nostalgic. This Reggae jam owned the airwaves and dominated MTV’s video rotation in the 90′s. Informer, something something something…yeah! Ironically, Snow has since moved from Toronto, Canada to pursue a career as a doctor in Toledo, Ohio.

Number #8 The Guess Who

The Guess Who were straight up cool. They ruled the roost in the 70′s and represented Winnipeg well. With hits like “Shaking All Over” and “These Eyes” almost everyone in North America is familiar with their work. Seriously check them out. They are doing a short tour with most of the original band in tow. I recommend that you catch The Guess Who at Del Mar Fairgrounds on June 23! Worth a trip to the States no?

Number #7 The Tragically Hip

Us Canadians know that the Tragically Hip are more than the REM of Canada! The crew from Kingston have entertained us for years and always bring the goods. Show your support my lovelies by going to their shows!

#6 Lukas Rossi

Lukas won Rockstar Supernova, basically American Idol for Rock in 2006. Lukas is a brilliant musician and vocalist that we KNOW will make Canada proud. His new album will be coming out later this year, so we encourage you to support this young and emerging talent from Toronto, Ontario.

#5 Gordon Lightfoot

While, he may not be your cup of tea, he is for your parents and laid back folk! I saw him perform in Vancouver a few years back and it was a special experience. I urge you to support Gordon by checking out a few of his prime shows.

Number #4 Alanis Morissette

This Jagged little pill was a pillar of Alternative Rock in the 90′s. Famous for several awesome and iconic videos that ruled the MTV video rotation, Alanis may be best known for dating fellow Canadian Dave Coulier when she was ONLY 15 years of age. Scandalous!

Number #3 Neil Young

Neil is the elder statesman of rock. Beginning with the Buffalo Springfield, moving on to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and finally as a solo artist, Neil embodies what it means to be a musician’s musician. Living in Los Angeles, you grow to appreciate creative professionals opinions and the consensus is unanimous – Neil Young is boss. Anyone going to check out Crosby, Stills, and Nash without Neil Young?

Number #2 Bryan Adams

Bryan Adams is the Jesus Christ of the mid 90′s love song. Once cast as lead for the film Don Juan DeMarco, Bryan Adams had to settle for merely writing a song for the film when the studio got cold feet and replaced him with Johnny Depp. He wrote a little song called “Have you Ever Really Loved a Woman” heard of it icon smile Top 10 Canadian Musicians of All Time

Bryan Adams at National Arts Centre Tickets on August 12

Number #1 Rush

Rush is easily one of the best bands ever. Led by Jewish dynamo Geddy Lee, Rush was a vital force in the music business with an ever evolving sound that spanned Progressive Rock to Synthesizer laden pop (Tom Sawyer anyone). I love Rush and I hope you feel the same! Limelight baby!

  1. David Ronnie says:

Tragically Hip behind Alanis Morissette? Really?

  2. Ruth Leveson says:

Canada has such brilliant musicians (it is the main reason I wanted to visit from Australia), but this list misses most of them. As well as many people listed above, what about Rufus Wainwright, Great Big Sea, La Bottine Souriante, Harry Manx, and all those Nova Scotians.

  3. susan says:

Your list will not stand the test of history … use of the term “musician” makes leaving out Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson, Liona Boyd, and Moe Koffman scandalous
Clearly, your title should have been
“Top 10 Canadian POP/ROCK Musicians of All Time” in which case it is still unacceptable that you left off Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and The Band in favour of some flavour-of-the-week forgetables.

  4. Peter Fodor says:

….. and how about Leonard Cohen?

  5. steven says:

haha aww i love canada your like america but without all the bullshit, but that list makes me laugh, there seriously the ten best canadian musicians of all time? haha, wheres avril lavigne? :P ..no i mean neil young, joni mitchell are pretty good, and bryan adams is really good, hes got two british parents though so hes got to be good, but anyway im just having a laugh with you because like i say i like canada.

  6. Devin Arn says:

This list is CRAP, First Lukas Rossi and Snow shouldn’t even be list. Second The Tragically Hip Should be in the top 3 if not #1. Nickelback should be in the top 10. Billy Talent should also be considered and will make the list as time goes on.

  7. david says:

This list could not be more perfect. Absolutely captures the spirit of Canada.

  8. El Diablo says:

You left out the greatness of Triumph and April Wine. Secretly I was hoping for a sexy picture of Anne Murray on the list as well.

  9. traxx says:

How about we fight the good fight and replace Lucas with Triumph?

  10. Leon says:

“Shaking All Over” was the Who, not the Guess Who

  11. fuck canadians says:

fuck you shitty loser canadians. ur a bunch of hockey playing faggots who’ve been molested at hockey camp. RUSH blows.

  12. Acubmas says:

“Shaking All Over” was actually Chad Allan & the Expressions. Who later became The Guess Who.

Seriously tho’, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, Snow and someone said Nickelback. Yes, they are all Canadian artists/bands but most Canadians consider some or all of these a major embarassment.

It is obvious that this list was compiled by someone who does not reside north of the 49th.

  13. cdntransplant says:

    Where’s Sarah McLachlan?????

  14. Brittanie says:

Really?!? where are the barenaked ladies?

  15. pebblesb87 says:

ok you will not see burton cummings singing with that fake guess who band. he is on tour with randy bachman in canada BACHMAN/CUMMINGS go see them instead if you are in canada. the others are a joke.

  16. Xander says:

Seriously, you can’t put some Johnny-come-lately on an “all time” list. There are dozens of more deserving performers than whoever this guy is. Cohen/McLachlan/BNL … hell, even old groups like Chilliwack have had more impact on the music scene that some Idol contestant. Inclusion of this kid is a joke and insult to the rest of the music industry.

I was reading a novel by Pearl S. Buck about China and life in general for the Chinese people in the ancient times. It was a very fascinating novel about how the Chinese people lived their lives and about their wonderful beliefs and customs. My relative loves to read ancient poems and literary compositions about life in general. She in point of fact convinced me one time to attend a poetry reading assembly and it was a wonderful event for me because the fictional works we discussed were a good read.

  22. TheAmerican says:

Really, this list missed so many …Most importantly is The Band any serious music enthusiast would list The Band in the top 3 if not the best. Also probably the best female artist Joni Mitchell. IMHO the top 3 should be, in any order, Neil Young, Rush, and The Band.

  23. JDH says:

This is one of the WORST lists I have EVER seen. Lukas Rossi? Do you even know what makes a good musician?

Neil Young is definitely on the list, probably at the top. Lightfoot is up there. Rush is a maybe. The Guess Who might barely make it (Bachman-Cummings Guess Who, not Bachman solo because that was just cheese).

Where’s Joni Mitchell? Lenny Breau? The Band? Leonard Cohen? Murray McLaughlin? Bruce Cockburn? Buffy St. Marie? Ian and Sylvia? Ronnie Hawkins? Long John Baldry? David Clayton Thomas? Lighthouse? John Kay of Steppenwolf? Jeff Healey? Paul Anka? Glen Gould?

Bryan Adams should be far away from any top 10 list, unless it’s top 10 Canadian disappointments.

  24. Shawn Connery says:

Leonard Cohen and the Band being left off is seriously criminal as both of them have such a massive massive influence on music throughout the world and whoever said Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Billy Talent, Simple Plan, or any of those other shitty bands should be exiled and forced to renounce their citizenship.

There is a very impressive list of great Canadian artists but there is an equally unimpressive list of Canadian popstar corporate puppets, lead by Justin Bieber.

Another group that should be on the list is Arcade Fire. My list would be:

    1. The Band
    2. Neil Young
    3. Tragically Hip
    4. Leonard Cohen
    5. The Guess Who
    6. Gordon Lightfoot
    7. Arcade Fire
    8. Joni Mitchell
    9. Bryan Adams
    10. Rush

  25. Brendon says:

    ARCADE FIRE?? Go f*ck yourself.

  26. Brian says:

Neil Young is the best Canadian musician ever to come out of Canada. He has been making great music since the 60′s and is still going strong. Whether it be with The Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young & Crazy Horse or performing solo, he always gives you his best.

It was nice to see Valerie McDermott, a music reviewer in Toronto rate Neil Young top Canadian performer of all time.

    I totally agree.

  27. Dave says:

    I absolutely love this song<3
