2010 LA Kings Playoff Prediction: It’s been years since the Los Angeles Kings have made it to hockey’s “second season,” but fans seem poised that this is a team on the rise. One of the amazing surprise stories of the 2009-2010 regular season has been that of these young guns from the West, and it wouldn’t be a shock at all to see the beach town boys make some waves in the 2010 NHL Playoffs. In hockey, any team can win on any given night, and the Kings have the grit, toughness, and talent to prove that statement correct. The LA Kings have scrappy players like Wayne Simmonds and Justin Williams to complement the flash of mainstays like Anze Kopitar, Ryan Smyth, and Dustin Brown. On defense, it doesn’t get much better than Drew Doughty, who has quickly elevated his game to become one of the best in the league. A first round matchup with the Phoenix Coyotes is very favorable for the Kings if they plan on making any kind of run. If they match-up against San Jose or Chicago in the opening round it will be bye bye for LaLa, though expect the Kings to come back even stronger and make a serious run next year. All that is missing from this young squad is experience.

How They Fared in 2009: Lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 of the 2009 Western Conference Finals

2010 Nuggets Playoff Prediction: The Denver Nuggets 2010 Playoffs quest will be interesting, to say the least. The Nuggets, once the Western Conference’s  2nd seed, now find themselves in the 5th spot, and looking at opening the playoffs on the road in Phoenix. Currently only 3 teams separate 7 teams in the West so the Nuggets can pretty much play anyone in the opening round. That being said, Melo is a year older and wiser, and Chauncey Billups has had almost two full seasons leading the Nuggets attack. With J.R. Smith off the bench, the Denver Nuggets have too much fire power to exit the ’10 Playoffs in the quarterfinals, so we see them winning at least a series. If they square up against the Mavericks, Jazz, or Lakers in the semis, that could spell doom for Denver. The Western Conference is just too tough in 2010, so 2011 will have to be the year for the young Nuggets.

2010 Devils Playoff Prediction: When the NHL Playoffs roll around, the NJ Devils take on the persona of an ace Major League pitcher, a la Roy Halladay, or CC Sabathia – if you don’t get to them early and knock them out, you may not stand a chance to win later. Going back to 2000, New Jersey has been eliminated in the opening 2 rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs a total of 6 times. The other 3 times they reached the Cup Final, winning twice and losing a heartbreaker to the Colorado Avalanche in 2001. The veteran Devils boast talent up front, solid defense and great goaltending in Brodeur. With Pittsburgh ailing, Buffalo lacking in firepower, and Washington weaker in net, we predict a tough victory over the Caps in the Eastern Conference Finals. Whether they can beat San Jose, Chicago, or even Detroit in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals is another question altogether.

2010 Magic Playoff Prediction: Superman Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic crashed the NBA postseason party in 2009. Can they do it again in the 2010 NBA Playoffs? Orlando enters the playoffs retooled and reloaded with all-star Vince Carter and feisty Matt Barnes. The Magic are virtually locked into the 2nd seed, meaning they will own home court at Amway Center for every opponent but the Cleveland Cavaliers. This also assures Orlando an easier matchup in the opening round, most likely playing Miami, Charlotte, or Milwaukee. Orlando, however, better start rooting for the Boston Celtics to either lose in the first round or end up as the 4th seed or the Magic’s run could end quickly. The Magic were magical last year, getting all the bounces and playing well beyond their years and experience. Expect the luck to run out in the ’10 playoffs, where the Magic will either lose in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals to the Celtics, or in the East Conference Finals to the Cavaliers.

2010 Blackhawks Playoff Prediction: It has been a while since hockey fans in Chicago could look forward to the spring.  After Jeremy Roenick, Steve Larmer and Ed Belfour left town in the mid 90′s, the Chicago Blackhawks became synonymous with NHL mediocrity. The Dallas Mavericks have been the NBA’s biggest enigma the past couple of seasons. 2010 Mavericks Playoff Prediction: 2010 could prove a very interesting, and very successful postseason for the Dallas Mavericks. Always atop the NBA ranks for total offense, the ’10 Mavericks are actually making an impression on the defensive side of the floor. As usual, owner Mark Cuban opened up his checkbook in 2010, flanking perennial all-star Dirk Nowitzki and hall-of-famer Jason Kidd with Shawn Marion, Caron Butler, and Brendan Haywood. The new look Mavs might have enough depth and toughness to avenge a 2009 playoff exit at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, with a rematch looming for the conference semis. With a little luck they could oust the L.A. Lakers in the conference finals as well, though we just don’t see that happening. A safe prediction for the Dallas Mavericks in the 2010 NBA Playoffs would be a Western Conference Finals loss – falling just short to the Lakers on the road in a decisive game 7.
