November 20, 2012 WWE SURVIVOR SERIES – THE ROCK and JOHN CENA team up at Madison Square Garden in NYC

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to the home of the Cheesesteak sandwich, the Liberty Bell and of course, the Philadelphia Flyers. The last half decade has been an exciting one for hockey fans in Philly, but frustrating at the same time. The Flyers have been bridesmaids but never brides. Twice they have reached the semi finals and even made a trip to the Stanley Cup final, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. A ton of off season changes were made by general manager Paul Holmgren, most notably the departures of Flyers captain Mike Richards (to the LA Kings) and scorer Jeff Carter (Columbus Blue Jackets). But don’t fret Flyers fans because upper management is NOT calling this a “rebuild” by any means. In fact, they are calling it a vote of confidence for young gun forward Claude Giroux who finally broke out of his shell last season. First ballot hall-of-famer Chris Pronger still mans the blue line and perhaps the biggest question for Philadelphia Flyers hockey fans has been answered in goal with the signing of Ilya Bryzgalov. Add in the mix Wayne Simmonds and a returning to the league Jaromir Jagr and the Flyers have, on paper, a very compelling argument at why they will go the distance this season. We really do love the heart that the team from the city of brotherly love brings to the ice game in and game out and if they can stay healthy they will be in the mix when its all said and done in June. Will this be the season that the perennial runners up to the cup finally get to sip Lord Stanley’s victory champagne? It would make for great hockey that’s for sure!

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview travels up north to the capital city of the hockey world and home of the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of the most baffling franchises in the modern history of NHL hockey. The Maple Leafs last played for the Stanley Cup several lifetimes ago, yet they continue to sell out every home game. It doesn’t even matter to hockey fans in Toronto, weather the team is winning or losing, Maple Leaf tickets are always sold out. This season however, there may actually be a reason for the Leafs to be the hot ticket in town. At least we hope so. The success of the Maple Leafs in 2011-2012 rests on the potential break out of forward Phil Kessel. Simply put, the 24 year old needs to have the kind of season general manager Brian Burke is paying him well to have. Veteran additions to the line up like Tim Connolly, Matthew Lombardi and John Michael-Liles will add much needed depth to a young team that also boasts hot goalie of the moment James Reimer. Leafs fans just need to remember this: a hot start in October means nothing if the team can’t close out games in Fabruary and March, a curse that has plagued this team for years. Oh, and lets not forget the one player who needs to have a rebound year to save his team and his career: Dion Phaneuf. If all of this happens, you got yourself a playoff berth Toronto. Congrats. Enjoy it!

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview looks at a team in a city that has been seemingly “rebuilding” since the days of Bret Hull and Adam Oates: the St. Louis Blues. It has been years since the faithful Blues fans have had a reason to be excited. Year after year they see stars shine on the ice only to pack up their skates and leave to free agency. Well good news St. Louis; it is our opinion that the 2011-2012 version of your hockey team is finally ready to take on the post season. Of course a lot would have to happen. Clubhouse leaders David Backes and Jason Arnott have to stay healthy. Young superstars-in-the-making TJ Oshie and Chris Stewart need to break out into the allstars the scouts have been touting them to be; and they need production from players like Andy McDonald and Barret Jackman. The one sure thing the Blues seem to have covered is depth between the pipes. Jaroslav Halak can be as good as it gets as far as NHL starting goalies go, and back up Brian Elliott could make an argument that he would be a starter on another squad. Bottom line is, we believe.

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to Washington, DC. Home of the White House’s big O (Obama), and the Verizon Center’s big O, the great number 8 Alex Ovechkin. The weight of the hockey world has been on the shoulder pads of the Washington Capitals franchise player over the last few season. Many hockey insiders had the Caps ranked ready to win the Stanley Cup, but when it came down to it, Ovechkin looked more like LeBron. This season Washington boasts as deep a line up as any of the top cup contenders in the league. Head coach Bruce Boudreau has a stacked lineup that includes Nicklas Backstrom, perenial all-star Mike Green and a finally healthy Alexander Semin. Some veteran additions on D with Dennis Wideman and Roman Hamrlik and in between the pipes with the often superb Tomas Vokoun, Washington has what it takes, on paper, to go deep. How deep though? It will all come down to how much heart these Capitals show when the puck drops this post season.

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to the big apple, New York City, home of the New York Rangers and the most famous arena in the world: Madison Square Garden. Hockey fans in the city that never sleeps have seen their season put to sleep early every season since Mark Messier hoisted the Stanley Cup almost 20 years ago. Upper management was in the spending mood in the off season by bringing in one of the hottest free agents in all of hockey, the prolific Brad Richards. Richards will attempt to take the Rangers to the promised land under the microscope of playing in the media capital of the world. Will he be able to handle the pressure? On paper the Rangers have a pretty exciting team but chemistry is everything in sports and when a team throws new players together sometimes it takes a while for it all to click. Just ask the Miami Heat about that. We see the Rangers riding Goalie Henrik Lundqvist into the playoffs this season, but in order for them to go deep this season coach John Tortorella is going to have to get everyone on the same page, something the Rangers have been unable to do in a very long time.

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to Steel Town, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. While the city celebrates the Steelers on with pride this NFL season, hockey fans in Pittsburgh don’t quite know what to expect from their Penguins this season. There are a ton of question marks, the most notably is Sidney Crosby. After being knocked out of active competition last year, Crosby’s future on the ice has been unknown. Rumors during the off season placed him everywhere from close to returning to action all the way to full blown retirement. As of this writing, Sid the Kid isn’t hanging up his skates for good yet, however he hasn’t been cleared for contact hockey and there is still an unknown timetable for when he can get back in the line up. The good news for Pens fans is that Russian power house Evgeni Malkin is 100% healthy are ready to go!  Along for the ride will be goal tender Marc Andre-Fluerry and last seasons standouts James Neal and Kris Letang. Can a Crosby-less Penguins team win the cup this season? There’s a better chance of Mario Lemieux coming out of retirement. In this writers opinion, the Penguins will be good for exciting games, but with out the Crosby show,  the season might get cancelled early.

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to the city of Angels, home of the Los Angeles Kings. The city of LA hasn’t been this excited about NHL hockey since the days of Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille . Ownership decided to finally open up the wallet and spend this off season nabbing Flyers captain Mike Richards and inking young blue liner Drew Doughty to a long term deal. A healthy and returning Anze Kopitar along with confident netminder Jonathan Quick are along for the ride as well and many are predicting this to be a banner raising year for the Kings. On Paper they are certainly one of the strongest LA Kings teams in the last 20 years and if they can stay healthy and find the back of the net they will go deep in the Stanley Cup Playoffs perhaps even going the distance! Be excited LA Kings fans, this just might be the season you have been praying for all these years.

Our 2011-2012 NHL season preview takes us to bean town, or more accurately “title town”, home of the Boston Bruins. In the last decade the city of Boston has seen championship banners raised for every pro sports franchise within city limits. The Patriots, the Celtics, the Red Sox and now The Boston Bruins! After a grueling campaign last season that saw the re-emergence of netminder  Tim Thomas to top form and the farewell to local favorite Marc Savard, the Bruins shocked the world by beating the Vancouver Canucks to win the Stanley Cup. Role players like Nathan Horton scored timely goals and monster-on-the-blueline Zdeno Chara held the line harder than the 1980′s Toto hit of the same name. In the end, champagne was poured and a ticket tape parade fueled the heart of the city. As hard as it was to win the cup, defending it will be a whole new challenge for Claude Julien and company. Do the Bruins have what it takes to repeat? Or will the sophmore curse of the cup hit Boston this season?
