What you might not know is how large of an audience viewed the game on television. The Canada USA gold medal game was the most watched event in Canadian recorded history. That game followed USA’s biggest hockey win ever, known as the Miracle on Ice, in the semi-finals of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The 2010 gold medal hockey game aired on NBC, drawing an average audience of 27.6 million U.S. viewers, with roughly 52.9 million Americans tuning in to the game at some point.

The 2010 NHL schedule resumed Monday with the Detroit Red Wings defeating the Colorado Avalanche 3-2. The remaining NHL teams are set to take the ice Tuesday. The success of the Winter Olympics begs the question, what does this mean for NHL hockey ratings going forward? The NHL has performed poorly on TV the past few seasons so the league is hopeful that a newly intrigued audience will springboard NHL television ratings for the remainder of the season and the 2010 NHL Playoffs.
