Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to the country music capital of the world, Nashville, TN, home of the Nashville Predators. Hardly the first place you would think of when talking about NHL hockey, but believe it or not, the Nashville Predators have built a nice little following for themselves. A team that has somehow beat the odds and made the playoffs four out of the last five seasons, the Predators once again find themselves in the hunt for the Stanley Cup. How do you look at this team and NOT write them off? We did. So did just about every hockey analyst at the start of the season. But here they are in the postseason, a place where they have tried to play the spoiler in the past. Can they do it again this year? Here is our 2010 Nashville Predators Playoff preview.
Home Games Played At: Bridgestone Arena
Key Players: Jason Arnott, Steve Sullivan, Shea Weber, J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, Ryan Suter
Head Coach: Barry Trotz
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 Nashville Predators Playoff Prediction: How can you not love this team? They play the NHL’s equivalent of “money ball” (in reference to MLB’s Oakland A’s), and just keep winning without superstar names on the marquee. Jason Arnott has carved himself quitea career in Nashville, but deep down we know he wants to get to play for the cup as bad as anyone in the league. Rookie sensation Patric Hornqvist and a returning-from-the-dead Steve Sullivan seem to be playing well enough that Arnott may even get out of the first round this season. On the blue line, the Preds boast one of the best young combos in the league with Ryan Suter and Shea Weber, while Rookie of the Year caliber goalie Pekka Rinne has done a fine job since the collapse of net-minder Dan Ellis. If anyone can play spoiler to the powerhouse Chicago Blackhawks, its Barry Trotz and his hard working Predators. We see them taking the Hawks to 6 games before bowing out gracefully.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to Beantown, one of the NHL’s original 6 cities and home of the Boston Bruins. The 2009-10 edition of Bruins hockey has been pretty trying at times for hockey fans in New England. A key injury to Marc Savard, and shaky play in between the pipes from last seasons hero, goalie Tim Thomas, made most hockey experts write off the Bruins this season. Surprisingly, they managed to win enough games to earn a spot in the NHL playoffs. A franchise famous for producing hall of fame blue liners like Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque, the Bruins haven’t seen a Stanley Cup Final since 1990. Will this be their year? Here is our 2010 NHL playoff prediction for the Boston Bruins.
Home Games Played At: TD Garden
Key Players: Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, Michael Ryder, Tuukka Rask, Dennis Wideman, Tim Thomas
Head Coach: Claude Julien
How They Fared in 2009: Lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals
2010 Boston Bruins Playoff Prediction: We aren’t quite sure what to make of the Bruins in the NHL playoffs this year. We’re pretty sure fans in Boston feel the same way, as it seems like a different team shows up each night. The offense is spread out through all three forward lines. On some nights can be quite dangerous, on other nights it can be non-existent. All this inconsistent talk and we have yet to mention the goalie problems. Last season, Tim Thomas was the man who carried the Bruins deeper than expected in the race to the Stanley Cup. This season Thomas has been on the bench watching youngster Tuukka Rask get playing time (although Thomas has been better as of late) while defenseman Dennis Wideman plays all star hockey one night and pee-wee hockey the next. The fact is, this team is too inconsistent and we don’t expect them to get past the first round this season. Which is sad, cause we like Mark Recchi.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us up the Rocky Mountains and through Denver, CO, home of the Colorado Avalanche. Since making the move from Quebec in 1995, the Colorado Avalanche have done nothing but win. The franchise’s 15 years at Pepsi Center treated fans to an era of championship hockey that included Hall of Fame players like Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy. The Avs were the team that finally allowed Ray Bourque to hoist the Stanley Cup high above his head. But, as in life, all good things must come to an end. So what happens when all these Hall of Famers retire? Apparently Colorado keeps winning. While most people wrote off the young Avalanche squad at the beginning of this season, they are now eating their words as Colorado has put up 40 wins and has qualified for the 2010 postseason. Will this new brand of Avalanche hockey yield the same playoff success as their predecessors? Here is our Colorado Avalanche 2010 playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: Pepsi Center
Key Players: Milan Hejduk, Paul Stastny, Chris Stewart, Matt Duchene, Craig Anderson
Head Coach: Joe Sacco
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 Colorado Avalanche Playoff Prediction: The bad news for Colorado Avalanche fans is that it looks like they will be facing the number 1 seed San Jose Sharks in the opening round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs. Or is it bad news? In fact, one could probably make a case for it being good news as the Sharks are notorious for collapsing in the playoffs year in and year out. If that is going to happen in 2010, the inexperienced Avalanche roster is going to have to swim in the deep end and play above their heads. Paul Stastny and Milan Hedjuk need to put the puck in the net while youngsters Chris Stewart and Matt Duchene are going to have to play like savvy veterans. Craig Anderson is also going to have to do his best Patrick Roy impression between the pipes if the Avs are going to have any prayer of playing past the first round. While that all might sound impossible, in the NHL playoffs anything is possible, and Avalanche fans believe that this is their year. We don’t necessarily agree with them, however, and see the Avalanche bowing out fairly easily in the West Quarterfinals.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to an unlikely place for ice hockey talk – Arizona – the desert home of the Phoenix Coyotes. You know a ship is sinking when “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky is thrown overboard. This team has been disappointing fans season after season, despite making attempts to win in the past with great players like Jeremy Roenick, Keith Tkachuk, Brett Hull, and Olli Jokinen. Ironically, with all these players and Gretzky out of the mix, for the first time in a long time Yotes fans find themselves buying NHL Playoff hockey tickets. The Coyotes have employed an entire team effort in 2010, a campaign that has yielded a 50 win season and respectable stats from team leaders Shane Doan and Radim Vrbata. Ilya Brzgalov in net certainly hasn’t hurt the team, as the young netminder is widely being touted as the NHL’s true MVP. What will happen to the Yotes in the 2010 NHL Postseason? Here is our Phoenix Coyotes 2010 Playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: Jobing.com Arena
Key Players: Ilya Bryzgalov, Shane Doan, Matthew Lombardi, Ed Jovanovski, Radim Vrbata
Head Coach: Dave Tippett
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 Phoenix Coyotes Playoff Prediction: As of press time, The Coyotes are staring northeast, straight at Hockey Town USA for their first round playoff match up with the Detroit Red Wings. This is an interesting pairing. Detroit, over the years, has won more championships than any other team in hockey’s modern era. However, along the way, they have always had problems with Cinderella teams, and have fallen prey in the first round to teams like the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Mighty Ducks. The Coyotes are poised to play that spoiler role this year, with team captain Shane Doan promising a thick playoff beard (according to him this means their opening series will go the distance). We agree. We’re just not sure if Phoenix will come out the winner. If so, however, they have a good chance of writing this Cinderella story to the final chapter, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. Surprisingly, the Yotes have been winning this year against tougher-than-them-on-paper Western Conference heavyweights like the Wings and Sharks, and have practically owned the Kings as well. We don’t know what their secret is, but whatever it is, it’s working. We wish the Coyotes all the best in the 2010 NHL Playoffs, because who doesn’t love to cheer for the underdog?

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to the City of Brotherly Love, home to hockey’s Philadelphia Flyers. It’s been a roller coaster ride for fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, known in the 70′s as one of the most feared teams on ice, “The Broad Street Bullies”. In the 80′s, during the Tim Kerr era, the squad made an appearance in Stanley Cup Finals but fell short of a championship. In the 90′s, the Eric Lindros era, the Flyers still never quite lived up to the hype and every season was “looking toward next season”. If healthy, the 2010 Flyers roster is one of the grittiest to enter the postseason in sometime. But do the Flyers have what it take to get past NHL Eastern Conference heavyweights like the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins? Here is our Philadelphia Flyers 2010 NHL Playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: Wachovia Center
Key Players: Jeff Carter, Chris Pronger, Mike Richards, Scott Hartnell, Simon Gagne
Head Coach: Peter Laviolette
How They Fared in 2009: Lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals
2010 Philadelphia Flyers Playoff Prediction: You have love a team like the Philadelphia Flyers. Every year they seem to find their way into the mix, and, when they get going and are healthy, few teams in the league can match the toughness that has forever been linked with Flyers franchise. Like all sports, defense in hockey wins championships, and having Chris Pronger man the blueline is the right foundation for a Stanley Cup contender. The Flyers are solid up front as well, with young guns Mike Richards and Jeff Carter among the best snipers in the league. Tough guy Daniel Carcillo will get a lot of playoff work alongside fellow front liner Scott Hartnell, both whom can play tough and score goals at the right time. Bottom line for the 2010 postseason Flyers – if they have a chance in getting past the Penguins or Devils they are gonna have to win a long, hard fought series. We wouldn’t bet the farm on that happening, but we wouldn’t be extremely shocked either…

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview lands in the capital city of Canada with the Ottawa Senators. After sporting one of the best lines of young talent in the NHL the past few seasons, the Sens shook things up this offseason and made a trade that had hockey fans buzzing. How do you trade Dany Heatley, one of the most explosive players in the world of hockey, and expect to keep your fan base excited? The answer – win hockey games. With over 40 wins and a guaranteed playoff berth, the Senators have put together one of the more interesting campaigns during the 2009-10 season. While most die hard hockey fans will more than likely write of the Senators, Coach Bryan Murray seems to think his team is ready for the big dance. Can the over-achieving Sens rally into the deep rounds of the 2010 Playoffs on their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup? Here is our Ottawa Senators 2010 Playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: Scotiabank Place
Key Players: Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Alex Kovalev, Brian Elliott, Milan Michalek
Head Coach: Bryan Murray
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 Ottawa Senators Playoff Prediction: Fortunately for the Ottawa Senators, the journey to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals can be smooth sailing for a team on a hot streak. If any team this season knows about streaks its the Sens, a team that has seen both ends of the spectrum in 2010. If Brian Elliott can get hot and the defense can play tough – Ottawa will be a team that better not be taken lightly in the 2010 NHL Playoffs. Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza provide one of the top 1-2 punches in all of hockey and can flat out put the puck the back of the net. We dont expect the Sens to win it all this year by any means but we do expect them to give teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins a hard time. No team should ever be overlooked when it comes to NHL hockey and the Sens are going to have to work harder than ever to prove that to their naysayers. A tough loss in a six or seven game opening round series looks like a viable prediction for the Senators in the 2010 playoffs.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to upstate New York, home of the Buffalo Sabres – the current number 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres were the cream of the crop in the East just two years ago, but departures of team leaders Chris Drury and Daniel Briere caused Buffalo to miss the playoffs each of the past two seasons. The fortunes of the Sabres have taken a turn in 2010, mostly due to stellar play in net from Ryan Miller. Miller is a virtual lock to win the 2010 Vezina trophy, and almost took Team USA all the way in the Olympics, falling just short to Team Canada in the Gold Medal game in Vancouver. Buffalo will host a first round playoff series in 2010, the question is will their grind-em out, low-scoring style of play be enough to win it? Here is our Buffalo Sabres 2010 Playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: HSBC Arena
Key Players: Ryan Miller, Tim Connolly, Thomas Vanek, Derek Roy, Jason Pominville
Head Coach: Lindy Ruff
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 Buffalo Sabres Playoff Prediction: The success of the Buffalo Sabres in 2010 is somewhat surprising. Taking a look at their team statistics nothing really stands out – other than the play of Ryan Miller of course. Team leader Thomas Vanek is having a subpar year, as are Derek Roy and Jason Pominville. In fact, no player on the Sabres roster has more than 24 goals in 2010. Other than a healthy Tim Connolly, the Buffalo Sabres success this season has been primarily due to the best goalie in the NHL, Ryan Miller. Miller finally got the notoriety he deserved in leading the Americans through the Winter Olympics. If he can get some more help from the hockey gods, he could conceivably put together a similar run in the NHL playoffs. However, the Sabres find themselves limping into the postseason, with injuries to Vanek and Connolly keeping them out of recent games. That bodes poorly for Buffalo, who we have pegged as a first round upset victim. We don’t see lightning striking twice with Miller being able to carry a team on his own, and the Sabres just don’t have enough up front to win 4 in a 7 game series.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview continues with the most successful team in the NHL over the past two decades, the Detroit Red Wings. Hockeytown, USA, has yet to experience an NHL postseason without their beloved winged wheels since 1989-90. Do the math… That is 20 years since we have entered the Stanley Cup Playoffs sans the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings have been a big disappointment so far in 2010, a team many picked to win the West for the 3rd straight season is on the cusp of missing the playoffs altogether. The lack of success for Detroit in 2010 is mostly due to injuries, and the Red Wings are getting healthy at just the right time, putting together a 7 game winning streak. Will the streak continue for the Wings in the NHL’s second season? Here is our Detroit Red Wings 2010 Playoff prediction.
Home Games Played At: Joe Louis Arena
Key Players: Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Nicklas Lidstrom, Jimmy Howard, Johan Franzen
Head Coach: Mike Babcock
How They Fared in 2009: Lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals
2010 Detroit Red Wings Playoff Prediction: The Red Wings limped through the 2010 season with a variety of injuries to their top players, as well as key roster defects of Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, and Ty Conklin during the 2009 offseason. The Wings spent most of the year on the outside of the playoff bubble, but recent health and scrappy play have them right back in the mix. The Red Wings currently stand as the 6th seed in the West and climbing, and will most likely play Vancouver or Phoenix in the first round. Despite not having home ice advantage the Wings should be favored to win either of those series. Assuming the talent laden Wings get past the first round, the bigger concern is how do they matchup against the Sharks or Blackhawks? Either opponent would make for a fantastic series that would be up for grabs. Despite all the veteran leadership and postseason experience of Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski, et al, their goalie, Jimmy Howard, has yet to play a playoff game. Inexperience in net will doom the Red Wings, as we see them exiting the 2010 playoffs in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview rolls along with the spotlight on Western Canada and the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver already witnessed some of the most exciting hockey in decades as the host city of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games – is more in store for the 2010 Canucks playoff push? Featuring the best teammate brothers in hockey, the Sedin twins, as well as potentially the best goalie in hockey, gold medal winner Roberto Luongo, the Canucks have a roster in place that could compete for the franchise’s first ever Stanley Cup in 2010. In fact, the Canucks probably have the best chance of any 2010 Canadian playoff hockey team of bringing an NHL championship back to Canada for the first time since the Montreal Canadiens won it in 1992-93. Will downtown Vancouver once again be home to a huge victory party for Canadian hockey? Here is our prediction for the Vancouver Canucks in the 2010 NHL Playoffs.
Home Games Played At: General Motors Place
Key Players: Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows, Christian Ehrhoff
Head Coach: Alain Vigneault
How They Fared in 2009: Lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals
2010 Vancouver Canucks Playoff Prediction: There is good news and bad news for the Vancouver Canucks as it relates to their 2010 postseason chances. The good – By virtue of playing in, and winning, the Western Confernce Northwest Division, the Canucks will earn the 3rd seed in the playoffs. The bad – The Detroit Redwings are looming as a potential first round matchup as the Western Conference’s 6th seed. The fate of the Vancouver Canucks in the ’10 playoffs will ultimately come down to what opponent they face. Seems like a simple enough statement, but that is the unfortunate truth. If they end up playing Nashville or Los Angeles in the West Quarterfinals, the Canucks should notch a series victory. If it ends up being Detroit, a team as good as any in the league, they will be out of the playoffs faster than Pavel Bure skates. Even if Luongo stands on his head, the competition will only get tougher as they face the likes of Chicago or San Jose in the Semis. A competitive 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs is predicted for Vancouver, but they will unfortunately have to start packing the van sooner than later this April.

Our 2010 NHL Playoffs preview takes us to sunny Los Angeles, CA, a town known mostly for the Lakers and Dodgers. The LA Kings hadn’t caught the attention of the City of Angels until the late 80′s, when they acquired the biggest name in the history of hockey, Wayne Gretzky. It seems as if the Kings haven’t been serious cup contenders since The Great One left town, and its been more than a decade since the words LA Kings have even been whispered in a Stanley Cup conversation. American and Canadian Olympic standouts Jack Johnson and Drew Doughty might finally have people talking Los Angeles Kings, as they enter their first postseason since the 2004-05 lockout. Here is our prediction for the Los Angeles Kings in the 2010 NHL Playoffs.
Home Games Played At: Staples Center
Key Players: Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty, Ryan Smyth, Alexander Frolov, Jonathan Quick
Head Coach: Terry Murray
How They Fared in 2009: Did not make the playoffs
2010 LA Kings Playoff Prediction: It’s been years since the Los Angeles Kings have made it to hockey’s “second season,” but fans seem poised that this is a team on the rise. One of the amazing surprise stories of the 2009-2010 regular season has been that of these young guns from the West, and it wouldn’t be a shock at all to see the beach town boys make some waves in the 2010 NHL Playoffs. In hockey, any team can win on any given night, and the Kings have the grit, toughness, and talent to prove that statement correct. The LA Kings have scrappy players like Wayne Simmonds and Justin Williams to complement the flash of mainstays like Anze Kopitar, Ryan Smyth, and Dustin Brown. On defense, it doesn’t get much better than Drew Doughty, who has quickly elevated his game to become one of the best in the league. A first round matchup with the Phoenix Coyotes is very favorable for the Kings if they plan on making any kind of run. If they match-up against San Jose or Chicago in the opening round it will be bye bye for LaLa, though expect the Kings to come back even stronger and make a serious run next year. All that is missing from this young squad is experience.
