The impact social media has on the world of sports, concerts, and theatre is getting more apparent every day. In the past week, Twitter has been a much talked about topic in the NBA, as superstars Ron Artest and Chris Bosh have used the platform to either publicly call out their coach or create leverage for a new contract. You can’t make it through 15 minutes of ESPN News anymore without some reference to Twitter or Facebook.
Conan O’Brien and ESPN Page 2 columnist Bill Simmons are taking things a step further, using social media to mobilize crowds in real time. During his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny Tour stop at Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Conan asked attendees to Tweet #cocosback, initiating a topical conversation about his stand up act. Bill Simmons has created a Twitter account called @CelticsChants, which calls on Boston fans attending the Celtics vs Cavaliers Playoff Game 6 at TD Garden to follow and Tweet in-game chant recommendations. Simmons will take on the roll of “go-to chanting coordinator,” and relay cheers during the course of the game. Suggestions thus far include jabs at Lebron James of “You’re a fa-ker! You’re a fa-ker!’” and “You’re gonna leave! You’re gonna leave!”
It will be interesting to see how successful Simmons’ plan is on Thursday. Is there a permanent marriage in the future between social media and live events? Is this the beginning of event promoters using social media platforms to increase fan interaction at shows? Follow @CelticsChants and find out!
Are you in New York and looking for a way to spend a fun filled afternoon with your kids? Why isn’t there a pop concert festival you can take them to… Hmmm….
That’s exactly what will be taking place at the Nassau Memorial Coliseum in NY on February 20th 2010 as Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place) and her Band The Scene take the stage at The Pop-Con, an all day event for tweens.
