There will be playoff basketball in Tennessee this season, as the Memphis Grizzlies are returning to the post-season for the first time in over five years. The last time the Grizz made the playoffs they were lead by a certain Spanish center named Pau Gasol. This Grizzlies roster in anchored by the other Gasol, Marc, as well by speedy and athletic players like Mike Conley Jr, O.J. Mayo, and Zach Randolph. Facing the Spurs in the opening round, will youth be served, or will the veterans march on as a legitimate title contender?
Home Games Played At: Fedex Forum
Key Players: Zach Randolph, OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol, Mike Conley
Head Coach: Lionel Hollins
How They Fared in 2010: Did not qualify for post-season
Memphis Grizzlies Playoffs Prediction For 2011: The Memphis Grizzlies were dealt a blow recently with the loss of their leading scorer, Rudy Gay, to injury. The Grizzlies must now lean heavily on Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, as well as their back-court in O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley Jr. Memphis is actually probably happy they ended up with the 8th seed, giving them a chance to play the San Antonio Spurs over the L.A. Lakers. They match up decently versus the Spurs, though it will take almost a miracle for them to pull the upset. Spurs in 5 – off-season time once again in Tennessee.

Doug Collins has the Philadelphia 76ers back in the NBA Playoffs for the first time in two years. A franchise known for eclectic superstars like Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, and Julius Erving, the Sixers are usually front-page material. This current Philly roster, however, is really a bunch of unassuming, non-spotlight type players. Can Coach Collins and his scrappy group shock the world and defeat the evil empire in South Beach in the Eastern Quarter Finals?
Home Games Played At: Wells Fargo Center
Key Players: Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala, Jrue Holiday
Head Coach: Doug Collins
How They Fared in 2010: Did not qualify for post-season
Philadelphia 76ers Playoffs Prediction For 2011: The acquisition of Elton Brand is finally beginning to pay dividends for the Philadelphia 76ers. The acquisition of Doug Collins has definitely helped. Here stand the Sixers, the Eastern Conference’s number seven seed, facing the daunting task of matching up against LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and the Miami Heat in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs. Philly’s return to the post-season is a great thing for the NBA, but, unfortunately, there is no way it will be a lasting one. There’s not too much to say here, other than the Sixers will get bounced from the 2011 postseason possibly faster than any other playoff team.

With a home court called the Rose Garden, one would assume the Portland Trail Blazers are an unimposing group. That person would be wrong. The current roster of Blazers are entering the 2011 NBA Playoffs with a ton of confidence, and pose matchup problems to most opponents at most positions. Young, hungry, athletic, and long, Portland is a very trendy pick amongst NBA analysts to pull at least one upset in the playoffs. Can they accomplish that feat?
Home Games Played At: Rose Garden
Key Players: LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy, Andre Miller, Gerald Wallace
Head Coach: Nate McMillan
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Phoenix Suns in 6 games in the Western Conference Quarter Finals
Portland Trail Blazers Playoffs Prediction For 2011: The Portland Trailblazers franchise never quite recovered from the 2001 Western Conference Finals, a series where they choked away a 15 point lead with one quarter until they reached the championship round. Had that Scottie Pippen, Steve Smith, Damon Stoudamire team defeated the Lakers, we may have been talking about the Portland dynasty of the early 2000s, not the one in LaLa land. Having shed their “Trail Gangsters” persona, the Blazers have been an up-and-coming group for a few years now. Its kind of weird, because, every post-season, they are typecast as that fearful first round opponent, yet, they never actually win a series. The rumblings are the same again this year, and the noise has been at that level all season, that Portland will cause matchup problems and defeat one of the elite teams in the Western Conference. The addition of Gerald Wallace, to go along with Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge’s career best year, has that noise at a fever pitch. They have drawn Dallas in the first round, and yeah, while they could win the series, we just don’t see it happening. Once again this over-hyped group of Trail Blazers will blaze a trail right out of the 2011 Western Conference QuarterFinals.

Surprise, surprise, the Denver Nuggets are steamrolling into the 2011 NBA Playoffs sans Carmelo Anthony. Who would’ve thunk it??? The Western Conference’s number five seed – the re-invented Nuggets are one of the hottest teams in the league after a franchise redefining trade. Do the new kids in the Mile High City have what it takes to make a deep post-season run? Keep reading to find out…
Home Games Played At: Pepsi Center
Key Players: Danilo Gallinari, Ty Lawson, Kenyon Martin, Raymond Felton
Head Coach: George Karl
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Utah Jazz in 6 games in the Western Conference Quarter Finals
Denver Nuggets Playoffs Prediction For 2011: Anyone who says they predicted the Nuggets would have any chance at post-season success post the Melo trade is just lying. Having held up the Denver front office all season, many believed Carmelo Anthony had damaged a once-proud franchise, and, even worse, ruined any chance they had at winning when he was finally dealt. Well, those concerns have now dissipated, with the infusion of young talent in the form of Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, and Raymond Felton, with current rostered players like Nene, Ty Lawson, and Kenyon Martin. The Nuggets are now deeper, and younger than ever, and, under the guidance of George Karl, are official a “team nobody wants to face.” Unlucky for both Denver and Oklahoma City, two such teams will meet in the opening round of the 2011 NBA Playoffs. We are big admirers of OKC, so unfortunately for fans in Denver, this will not be the year the Nuggets celebrate their first NBA title.

We continue our 2011 NBA Playoffs preview with the Orlando Magic, probably the least celebrated of the league’s top teams over the past few years. When thinking of the most successful playoff teams since 2007, names like the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and Cleveland Cavaliers come to mind. Its odd that so many sleep on Orlando, a team that has represented the East in the NBA Finals, Conference Finals, and Conference Semi-Finals in the last three playoff tournaments. Will the Magic hit for the cycle with an NBA Championship in 2011?
Home Games Played At: Amway Center
Key Players: Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, Gilbert Arenas
Head Coach: Stan Van Gundy
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Boston Celtics in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals
Orlando Magic Playoffs Prediction For 2011: Its rare that a team as successful as the Orlando Magic would undergo such a dramatic facelift. Gone from last year’s squad are Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, and Marcin Gortat, replaced with Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson, and Hedu Turkoglu. The consistents for Orlando are still there, dominant in the middle with Dwight Howard, and lighting quick at the point with Jameer Nelson. Quirky head coach Stan Van Gundy still holds the reigns on this squad, built for the inside outside game and ownership of the three point line. There is a reason Orlando is successful and not championship caliber, and that is the inherent inconsistency of their offensive style and reliance on D-Howard on Defense. None of that has changed this year, so expect the Magic to knock down enough treys and feed Howard with enough easy baskets for a first round victory, then lose to the Chicago Bulls in the 2nd round.

Next stop on our 2011 NBA Playoff preview is Dallas, TX home to the Dallas Mavericks. The best way to sum up this group of Mavs is as such: good-but-not-good-enough. Put another way, the Mavericks are always the bridesmaid, never the bride. We can keep going with the cliches, but you get the point. Always amongst the league’s elite in the regular season, Dallas is always amongst the first to hit the golf course come April. Is 2011 the year the Mavs get over the proverbial hump and bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to the Lonestar State?
Home Games Played At: American Airlines Center
Key Players: Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Shawn Marion
Head Coach: Rick Carlisle
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the San Antonio Spurs in 6 games in the Western Conference Quarter Finals
Dallas Mavericks Playoffs Prediction For 2011: We feel for you, Dirk Nowitzki. We feel for you, Mark Cuban. Honestly, its tough to have pity on millionaires and billionaires, but c’mon, how much losing can such a proud franchise endure? Cuban is always willing to open the checkbook for talent, and Dirk is one of the NBA’s most talented players. With the likes of quality players named Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, and Brendan Haywood, you would think the Mavericks would have won at least one crown in the last decade. Not so fast my friend. After blowing a 2-0 lead and a double digit 4th quarter game lead to the Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals, things have never been the same for the Dallas Mavericks. They probably never will be. This roster can be described as “veteran” at best, more accurately as “old,” and it’s window for winning a championship has probably closed. Too soft to compete with the big boys in the West, The Lakers, Spurs, and Thunder, expect another postseason collapse and early exit in the 2011 playoffs for the Dallas Mavericks.

Continuing our focus on experience, the Boston Celtics head into the 2011 NBA Playoffs having been to two out of the last three championship series. The C’s were oh so close last year, defeating the best in the east before falling to the Lakers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Another year is weighing down this aging group of Celtics, so it begs the question, if they couldn’t win it all in 2010, how are they going to win it all in 2011?
Home Games Played At: TD Garden
Key Players: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo
Head Coach: Doc Rivers
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in game 7 of the NBA Finals
Boston Celtics Playoffs Prediction For 2011: Like a fine wine, the Boston Celtics seem to get better with age. But, like all good things, the road must end for this group of cagey veterans. The Boston Celtics have a minimum of 4 future hall-of-famers, Paul Pierce, KG, Shaquille O’Neal, the new all time 3pt leader, Ray Allen – and possibly a fifth, with all-star guard Rajon Rondo in the mix. There is no doubt that this is now Rondo’s team, especially with coach Doc Rivers probably coaching his last season. And, as much energy as Rondo brings each night, is it enough to energize the big 3 and Shaq to the point they can win four playoff series? Its hard to pick against the Celtics, and in doing so, we would be surprised if we were wrong. But… It just seems as if the collective star power, and younger star power, of the Miami Heat will be tough much for the Celtics to contain in a seven game series. And, if Boston were to defeat Miami in a likely second round matchup, its tough to see them having enough fuel in the tank to beat Derrick Rose and the even younger Chicago Bulls. Bottom line is the Celtics will fall short this year, and we will probably see this Boston group of players relevant for the last time.

As we move on to analyzing the San Antonio Spurs chances in the 2011 NBA playoffs, our focus shifts from youth to experience. Possibly the most seasoned cohesive team unit in the postseason field, the Spurs present a formidable force to any opponent they face. There has been a resurgence this year in the Alamo City, with the Spurs currently boasting the best record in the league. However, the losses are beginning to pile up for the men in Silver and Black, so their chances at capturing another NBA title remain questionable, at best.
Home Games Played At: AT&T Center
Key Players: Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili
Head Coach: Gregg Popovich
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Phoenix Suns in 4 games in the Western Conference Semi Finals
San Antonio Spurs Playoffs Prediction For 2011: You know the names. Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Popovich. You know the brand of basketball – fundamentals, defense, execution. It is very unlikely that you knew with less than two weeks left in the regular season, the San Antonio Spurs would hold the best record in the NBA. Well, that is the current state of affairs, and, despite the fact that the Spurs recently emerged from a 6 game losing streak, the road to the 2011 NBA Championship will most likely go through the AT&T Center. Before a recent rash of injuries witnessed all three of the Spurs Big 3 ride the pine of late, San Antonio was the league’s best at protecting home court. Those injuries are now a cause for concern for the Spurs – causing many to reiterate what they have been saying throughout the season – that the Spurs are too old to win it all. We agree. As experienced as they are, the San Antonio Spurs cannot compete with the LA Lakers unless they are at full strength. And, even at full strength, the aged legs of the Spurs cannot run with the youthful ones of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Look for the Spurs to exit in the same round in 2011 as 2010, the Western Conference Semis.

Fans of the Oklahoma City Thunder are hoping youth will be served in the 2011 NBA Playoffs. The slipper came off these Cinderella darlings last year just before midnight, as the upstart Thunder came within a Pau Gasol buzzer beater and one win from beating the mighty Lakers. Viewed by many as the biggest challenge to LA this year, OKC could be laying the foundation for many years of championship runs. Will that quest end with a title in 2011?
Home Games Played At: Ford Center
Key Players: Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Kendrick Perkins
Head Coach: Scott Brooks
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in 6 games in the Western Conference Quarter Finals
OKC Thunder Playoffs Prediction For 2011: Oklahoma City officially put the league on notice during the 2010 NBA Playoffs. The young squad occupying the Ford Center is ready for prime time. OKC was the 8th seed last year, and, despite being given zero chance of beating the defending champs, took two games from the Lakers. It wasn’t as much about the Thunder winning a pair of games as much as how they did it – bringing so much energy at home that they throttled Kobe and Co. by double digits. Kevin Durant is now in the “best player in the league” discussion, and, joining him on the Western Conference All Star roster earlier this year was uber talented PG Russell Westbrook. The Thunder added even more toughness at the trade deadline in Kendrick Perkins to go along with frontline players like Serge Ibaka and Nick Collison. Add this all up, and the Oklahoma City Thunder will be an extremely tough out in the 2011 playoffs. We see them winning every post-season series against teams not named LA Lakers, so be on the lookout San Antonio, Dallas, and Denver…

Here is something that has not been said in the past 7 years. The New York Knicks have qualified for the NBA Playoffs. Another franchise that lost its pursuit of LeBron James, and may be the better for it, the new look Knicks will enter the post-season with real weapons and a real chance at making some noise. Do The Knickerbockers have what it takes to win a series or two in 2011?
Home Games Played At: Madison Square Garden
Key Players: Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Chauncey Billups, Landry Fields
Head Coach: Mike D’Antoni
How They Fared in 2010: Did not qualify for postseason
NY Knicks Playoffs Prediction For 2011: It has been a long time since the NBA Playoffs had a representative from NY wearing Blue and Orange. Seven years of losing basketball had fans in MSG depressed – yet – looking forward to the off-season of 2010 where a bevy of free-agents laid in wait of saving the franchise. After striking out on most of the big names, including LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, the Knicks went with Plan-B, AKA Amare Stoudemire. Great out of the gate this season, the Knicks progress since slowed, probably due to swirling rumors that Carmelo Anthony could be had from the Denver Nuggets. That rumor became reality, as New York traded three of their starting five players for Melo and Mr Big Shot, Chauncey Billups. Shock-waves flowed through NYC, and, excitement grew that the NY Knicks had a real chance of winning a title. With a less than stellar record with Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups in the fold, expectations have come down dramatically for Knicks fans. However, few teams in the East would like to face Melo, Amare, Billups, and a D’Antoni offense in the first round of the playoffs. Expect the Knicks to take a few games off a team like Boston or Miami in the opening round before exiting post-season play early in 2011. 2012 will be a different story… Maybe…
