Lets be honest, the Phoenix Coyotes were left for dead by just about every hockey expert at the start of the 2010-11 NHL season. Well, head coach Dave Tippett has managed to spark a fire in this team, and here they are, 82 games later, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite never reaching the NHL Finals, Captain Shane Doan vows this team has it in them to make a run. Veteran Ray Whitney seems to have found his fountain of youth, and X-factor goalie Ilya Bryzgalov is at times the very best in the league. Is this enough to send this team all the way to the promised land this season?

Key Players: Ilya Bryzgalov, Shane Doan, Keith Yandle, Ray Whitney
Head Coach: Dave Tippett
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 of the Western Conference Quarter-Finals
Phoenix Coyotes Playoff Prediction For 2011: Teams like the Coyotes are hard to gauge when it comes to predicting the Stanley Cup Playoffs. On the one hand, you don’t even know how they are in the playoffs to begin with – then on the other hand, you are kind of cheering for them to play spoiler. The ‘Yotes can win a playoff series. Stranger things have happened. If Bryzgalov can get hot anything is possible. We just wouldn’t bank on it. In reality, the Phoenix Coyotes should be playing golf after the 1st round.

The Buffalo Sabres are consistent. With this team you know what you are getting. Young, fast-paced hockey, gritty defense, and lights-out goaltending. The Sabres are ready again to take a crack at Lord Stanley’s Cup, and according to Derek Roy, win it. Pretty bold statement. The Sabres have never won the Stanley Cup – in 41 years as an NHL franchise, not one cup. They came a Bret Hull-kicked-in-the-crease-goal away from doing it in what seems like a lifetime ago already. Could this be the year the Sabres finally reach the top of the hockey world?
Home Games Played At: HSBC Arena
Key Players: Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville, Drew Stafford, Ryan Miller
Head Coach: Lindy Ruff
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Boston Bruins in 6 games in the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals
Buffalo Sabres Playoff Prediction For 2011: Anyone who watches NHL Stanley Cup Playoff hockey knows one thing: a hot goalie can mean everything. When Ryan Miller is your goaltender, you are always in a position to win hockey games, especially in the playoffs. If Thomas Vanek can keep playing like he has of late, and players like Jason Pominville can wake up, we can see the Sabres being a tough matchup for anyone in the East this playoff season. If things break perfectly, we see them having a chance to beat the Flyers and getting as far as the second round this year. Anything beyond that would be reason to celebrate in Buffalo.

We keep forgetting Nashville, Tennessee is a hotbed for hockey, until, come the playoffs every year, there stand those pesky Nashville Predators. Once again the Preds are one of the hardest working group of overachievers in the entire league, led by unassuming head coach Barry Trotz. Their leading goal scorer has only 25 goals, their teams total points leader had a mere 50, yet here the Predators are in the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again. How the heck to they keep doing it?
Home Games Played At: Bridgestone Arena
Key Players: Pekka Rinne, Martin Erat, Shea Weber, Patric Hornqvist
Head Coach: Barry Trotz
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 7 of the Western Conference Quarter-Finals
Nashville Predators Playoff Prediction For 2011: It is dumbfounding when it comes to the Nashville Predators and their constant presence in the Stanley Cup playoffs. They should be an easy first round match up for any team that plays them, but true to form, they wont be. This ruthless team boasts a pair of defensemen in Shea Webber and Ryan Sutter that can shut you down. Gritty front liners like JP Dumont and David Legwand score timely goals and Pekka Rinne can be lights out if he wants to. We don’t see this team winning the cup, but they will 100% bring on the excitement by making their series competitive. One and out for the Preds, in a very tough opening round series for the Ducks.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Chicago Blackhawks are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Ladies and gentlemen, the Chicago Blackhawks are beyond lucky to have a chance to defend that Stanley Cup championship during the 2011 playoffs. Players on the Minnesota Wild will be getting extra Christmas cards this year from fans in the Windy City, because, without a Wild win against the Dallas Stars on the final game of the season, the Blackhawks would not have received an invite to the post-season. What will become of that invitation?
Home Games Played At: United Center
Key Players: Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Corey Crawford
Head Coach: Joel Quenneville
How They Fared in 2010: Won the 2010 Stanley Cup
Chicago Blackhawks Playoff Prediction For 2011: The Chicago Blackhawks ended a 49 year drought by capturing the NHL Stanley Cup in 2010. They almost began a new drought before the 2011 playoffs even started. It took Chicago a full 82 games to qualify for the 2011 post-season, and while they have lost players like Dustin Byfuglien and Antti Niemi, much of their roster remains intact to defend their crown. The Blackhawks now hold the 8th seed, and will face an uphill battle against the Presidents Trophy winning Vancouver Canucks in the opening round of the playoffs. Loaded with talent, and having beaten the Canucks two playoffs in a row, the Hawks are surely optimistic they can pull off the upset. We, on the other hand, do not agree. If the Chicago Blackhawks truly had what it takes to win, they wouldn’t have struggled all season. Corey Crawford is not the answer in goal, it will be one and done for Chicago in the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The addition of new General Manger, Steve Yzerman, has fans of the Tampa Bay Lightning all charged up. It also has the Lightning back in the playoffs for the first time in four years. We all remember this Bolts franchise for their Stanley Cup victory in 2004, and, had it had not been for the lockout the following year, we may have remembered them for a small dynasty. Can the few players that remain from that Tampa squad catch lightning in a bottle and sip from The Stanley Cup in 2011?
Home Games Played At: St. Pete Times Forum
Key Players: Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Simon Gagne, Dwayne Roloson
Head Coach: Guy Boucher
How They Fared in 2010: Did not qualify for 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Tampa Bay Lightning Playoff Prediction For 2011: The Tampa Bay Lightning have never been questioned on the offensive side of the ledger. Players like Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis have been stalwarts at St. Pete Times Forum, names consistently found in the NHL’s elite list of scorers. The Lightning added Steven Stamkos to the roster two seasons ago, and Simon Gagne to the fold this past off-season, so this Bolt’s lineup is as stacked as any when it comes to putting the puck in the net. The biggest questions have always been on defense and in goal, two questions still relatively unanswered in 2011. The Lightning have gotten fairly consistent play from Dwayne Roloson since acquiring him in a trade mid-season, as well as from offensive defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron. Between Roloson, St. Louis, Lecavalier, and GM Stevey Y, we are talking about a franchise that has championship experience. Much like the Anaheim Ducks in the West, this is a team nobody wants to face. Yet, with too many questions on the defensive side of the ledger, they probably cannot go all the way. Look for Tampa to celebrate a series win for the first time in seven years, then back to more of the norm – abbreviations like NBC, VS, CBC, and TSN – ie watching the rest of the 2011 NHL Playoffs on television.

The winningest franchise in NHL history, the Montreal Canadiens, enters the 2011 post-season and serves as Canada’s second chance of bringing a Stanley Cup back to the Great White North. The Habs were the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup – that accomplishment happening in 1993 – and fans in Quebec are hoping history repeats itself 18 years later. Not an odds-on favorite to win the championship, or even a singular playoff series, Montreal will once again relish the underdog role that almost brought them glory in 2010. Will the Montreal Canadiens glow in the spotlight, or melt under the playoff pressure?
Home Games Played At: Centre Bell
Key Players: Carey Price, Tomas Plekanec, Mike Cammalleri
Head Coach: Jacques Martin
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals
Montreal Canadiens Playoff Prediction For 2011: The Montreal Canadiens completed more than half of a magical journey in the 2010 playoffs. In almost miraculous fashion, Montreal overcame the two best players in the league, Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, in defeating the East’s #1 and #4 seeds. Pivotal in the Habs post-season run was goalie Jaroslav Halak, who basically single handedly won them two playoff series. The clock finally struck midnight on the Canadiens, errr the Philadelphia Flyers beat them in five in the Eastern Conference Finals, causing the departure of Halak and the handing of the reigns to Carey Price. Here we are a year later, and the Montreal Canadiens are facing a similar uphill battle. Mike Cammalleri and Tomas Plekanec still anchor a very average offense, and coach Jacques Martin still calls for a grinding style of play that hopes his team can barely outscore their opponent. Can we really expect Montreal to win more series against top teams with 2-1 type scores? Not a chance, look for the Montreal Canadiens to go down in the Eastern Quarterfinals in 2011.

Quack, quack quack, the Anaheim Ducks are back. They may have dropped the “Mighty” from their name, and changed their arena name “The Pond” to “The Honda Center,” but the Ducks formula for success remains the same. Big lines, scoring defenseman, and stingy goaltending. While not amongst the favorites to win the Stanley Cup before their 2010-2011 campaign began, here sit the Ducks with a cliched playoff spot and their eye on the prize – Lord Stanley’s Cup. We see Anaheim’s chances as…
Home Games Played At: Honda Center
Key Players: Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, Lubomir Visnovsky, Jonas Hiller
Head Coach: Randy Carlysle
How They Fared in 2010: Did not qualify for 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Anaheim Ducks Playoff Prediction For 2011: It is been a consistent slide downhill for the Anaheim Ducks since winning the Stanley Cup in the 2006-2007 season. Despite having two of the best young players in the NHL – Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf – the Ducks never seemed to muster the consistency necessary to make another serious run at a championship. Going into this season, the Ducks faced questions about their defense, after losing Scott Neidermeyer to retirement and Chris Pronger to the Flyers a season ago. They answered the doubters with numerous players leading the league in relevant categories – Corey Perry in goals, Lubomir Visnovsky in defensemen scoring, Cam Fowler in rookie defense scoring, Tony Lydman in plus minus. Add the timeless Finnish Flash Teemu Selanne’s best season in years, and young power forwards Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf to the mix, and the Anaheim Ducks are a dangerous team nobody wants to face. However, with number one goalie Jonas Hiller fighting a bout with vertigo, we just don’t see Anaheim strong enough between the pipes two win four series. We do believe in the Ducks though, and would not be shocked at all to see them oust a team like Detroit in the opening round of the 2011 playoffs.

The City of Brotherly Love was heart broken last season, as their Philadelphia Flyers took them on a Cinderella ride right to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, only to drop the series to the Chicago Blackhawks. So what makes this season’s Flyers better than last? Experience. Simply put. This roster of hard working grinders, who can also light the lamp, have now tasted it. They’ve played in the Stanley Cup Finals and want nothing more than to do it again. This time, however, Peter Laviolete and company plan on taking the cup home with them.
Home Games Played At: Wells Fargo Center
Key Players:Claude Giroux, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Chris Pronger, Scott Hartnell, Danny Briere
Head Coach: Peter Laviolette
How They Fared in 2010: Lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals
Philadelphia Flyers Playoff Prediction For 2011:You gotta love the Flyers. These Broad-Street Bullies play an intense brand of hockey that gives even the most meaningless regular season game a playoff feel. They are easily the toughest team this post-season, and, if youngster Claude Giroux can stay as hot as he has this year, Flyers fans have plenty to be excited about. We never would have picked the Flyers to get to the championship round last season, and this season we feel pretty much the same. The only real difference, if they DO make it to the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, we won’t consider it a surprise.
